An mRemoteNG alternative for Mac and Windows
Tessera is a remote connection manager for SSH, RDP, and VNC. It reads your mRemoteNG config, runs on macOS (Apple Silicon) and Windows, needs no account, and keeps your data on your own disk.
Who it's for
- You used mRemoteNG on Windows and are moving to a Mac, where mRemoteNG doesn't run.
- You want one tool with the same inventory on macOS and Windows.
- You need SSH, RDP, and VNC, and don't need Telnet, rlogin, or serial.
What imports in one step
- →Your confCons.xml file: hosts, folders, and connection settings.
- →Folder structure and inheritance: a folder passes its settings down to its child hosts.
- ✕Passwords. Tessera never imports passwords. Re-enter them after the import and they go into the OS keychain.
- ✕Connections that use protocols Tessera doesn't have (see below).
From the command line:
$ tessera import mremoteng ~/confCons.xmlFeature mapping
| In mRemoteNG | In Tessera |
|---|---|
| Connection tree with folders | Folders with inherited settings and separate credentials for SSH, RDP, and VNC |
| RDP, VNC, SSH | RDP, VNC, and SSH; plus SFTP, port forwarding (-L, -R, -D), and ProxyJump for SSH |
| Tabs | Tabs, split panes (up to 4 per tab), and a command palette |
| Config in an XML file | Inventory in YAML files on disk; secrets in the OS keychain |
| Windows only | macOS (Apple Silicon) and Windows |
| Export in its own format | Export back to mRemoteNG XML, to RoyalJSON for Royal TS/TSX, or to a .tessera bundle |
Honest limits
- No Telnet, rlogin, raw, HTTP(S), or PowerShell remoting. No serial either.
- No Linux yet: it's in development and there is no public build. Today Tessera runs on macOS (Apple Silicon) and Windows. There is no Intel Mac build.
- Tessera is free only up to 10 hosts; beyond that you need a license. mRemoteNG is free under GPL-2.0.
Price
Free up to 10 hosts. A license is 1 599 UAH (≈ $39) per seat, perpetual, with 12 months of updates. No account and no cloud; the license is verified offline.
